HERSHEY, Pa. — Former patients of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center gathered on Monday, Sept. 16 to celebrate the hospital that saved their lives.
The Hershey Medical Center is the only Pa. hospital outside of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia that performs heart transplant surgeries. The program has helped more than 590 patients receive a heart transplant since 1984.
Thanks to the program, many patients got to witness moments in their lives that they did not think they would have if not for the procedure.
"I get to see grandchildren being born," said Matthew Hershey, a former heart transplant patient. "I get to see weddings. I get to see things that I wouldn't have normally been able to see. I get to go and have a semi-normal life."
