HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Central Dauphin School District's (CDSD) search for its next superintendent has landed the district with a candidate close to home.
The approval for election and appointment of Eric Turman, the current superintendent of the Harrisburg School District (HSD), was on the agenda for Monday night's board meeting.
In a letter to HSD parents and families Friday, Turman addressed the possible selection for the position.
"It has truly been my great honor to work in the Harrisburg School District over the last three years," Turman wrote. "If I am appointed, our Receiver will share a leadership transition plan with our school community in the coming weeks, including a timeline."
The school board ultimately approved Turman for the position at Monday night's meeting.
Turman's proposed contract is for five years starting on July 1 with a base salary of $230,000. His starting salary with the Harrisburg School District was $179,500 and his term was set for expiration in 2026.
CDSD's former superintendent Norman Miller resigned on February 1, after serving in the district for 12 years. His salary at the time of his resignation was $202,481.64 annually.
The move follows a number of recent issues within the Central Dauphin School District.
In February, Central Dauphin East High School went into a day-long lockdown after a student brought a firearm to school.
More recently, the death of Sophomore Justin Johnson has sparked fierce criticism over allegations of racism and bullying from students, parents, and employees within the district.
The events leading up to Johnson's death remain under investigation.
