Work is expected to start on September 5 on the Capitol Gateway project in an effort to improve traffic and pedestrian safety

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Two major Harrisburg intersections are expected to see upgrades.

The Capitol Gateway project construction is set to start along Forster Street on September 5, city leaders announced. Work will be done on the two heavily used intersections of Front and Forster Streets, as well as Second and Forster Streets.

Crews will install traffic calming features like curb bump outs, and enlarging the median, which will give pedestrians a safe place to stand if they are unable to cross the street in the designated time.

City leaders say the construction will continue through the end of October, and break for the winter, per PennDOT construction guidelines. Crews will then return in the spring to finish the project.

Forster Street will remain open, with a lane restriction in each direction and pedestrian traffic will be detoured.

It's just one piece of the city's "Vision Zero initiative" to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Harrisburg within 10 years. The initiative started in 2018, being implemented in phases, and is expected to wrap up in 2028.

Other projects under Harrisburg's "Vision Zero" include the Second Street two-way conversion, which opened the road to two-way traffic in late 2022.
