Heavy police, emergency presence in Derry Township due to discovery of 'suspicious item'

The item was found near a UGI substation on Hersheypark Drive, Derry Township Police said. Authorities eventually determined it was not dangerous.

HERSHEY, Pa. — A heavy police presence was seen on Hersheypark Drive on Thursday after a suspicious object was found, Derry Township Police said.

The object was found by employees at a UGI substation at about 11:17 a.m., police said. The item was unfamiliar to the employees, who contacted authorities as a precaution.

Derry Township Police responded to the scene, as did the Hershey Fire Company, Life Lion EMS, and the Dauphin County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities also dispatched members of the State Police Hazardous Device and Explosives team to assist, according to police.

The item was eventually determined to be neither hazardous nor dangerous.

Once that determination was made, Derry Township Police declared the area safe and re-opened it.
