DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — A Dauphin County Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam involving a suspect impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Derry Township Police say the caller is claiming to be a member of their department, sometimes using the actual names of their officers. The suspect asks the recipient of the calls to pay off outstanding warrants or fines from traffic tickets and other offenses using electronic apps, gift cards, or Bitcoin, according to police.
"The Derry Township Police Department does not accept payments for traffic ticket fines, or warrants for the same, through any electronic apps such as Apple Pay, CashApp, Bitcoin or gift cards," the police department said in a statement. "Should you receive a phone call from a person claiming to be a police officer, saying that you have warrants or owe fine money, please gather the information that you are provided and contact your local police department directly at their publicly published phone number. They will be able to confirm the existence of fines or warrants for you."
