HARRISBURG, Pa. — Police have charged a Dauphin County man in connection to a deadly crash that killed a pedestrian in Harrisburg last month.
Dylan Haines, 31, of Middletown, is charged with a second-degree felony count of causing an accident involving injury or death and two summary offenses relating to the December 6 crash that claimed the life of 34-year-old Jose Borrero, according to a criminal complaint filed by Harrisburg Police.
The investigation determined Borrero was struck while standing outside his car to check a mechanical issue at the intersection of Cameron and Paxton streets at about 8:15 p.m. on the night of the incident, police claim.
Borrero was struck and killed by a vehicle that was allegedly being driven by Haines, police claim.
Haines allegedly drove off without notifying police or stopping to check on Borrero's condition, according to police.
Borrero, of York, was transported to Penn State Holy Spirit Hospital, where he died of injuries sustained in the incident three days later.
The complaint does not detail how investigators determined Haines was a suspect, but said they found his Pontiac Grand Prix parked outside his home and observed the vehicle had sustained damage to the hood and windshield that was consistent with a pedestrian accident.
In an interview with police, Haines said he did not know he had struck a person, claiming that he believed his vehicle had been struck by an object that had fallen off an overpass.
There are no overpasses at the intersection where Borrero was struck, police noted in the complaint.
Police also noted that the intersection at Cameron and Paxton streets was well-lit and that it would not have been hard for Haines to see Borrero at the time of the crash.
