One dead in multi-vehicle crash on Route 283 West in Dauphin County, authorities say

The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Route 283 West near Toll House Road in Londonderry Township, a PennDOT spokesperson said.

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Update, 4:15 p.m.: The scene is cleared and the roadway is expected to be open within the hour, according to PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler.

Previously: A portion of Route 283 in Dauphin County has been closed due to a deadly multi-vehicle crash involving two tractor trailers and a passenger vehicle, a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesperson said Tuesday.

One person died in the crash, which occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Route 283 West near Toll House Road in Londonderry Township, according to PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler.

A Ford Escape was rear ended and subsequently caught fire, according to Pennsylvania State Police. A woman who was driving the Escape was pronounced dead at the scene; her identity has not yet been released.

Traffic on Route 283 is being diverted at Toll House Road and returned to Route 283 at Vine Street, Schreffler said.

There is no current estimate on how long the road will be closed in the area of the crash. 

The investigation of the crash is ongoing. PSP - Harrisburg asks anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash camera footage to contact them at 717-671-7500.
