DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — One person was killed in a Jan. 1 fire in Dauphin County.
According to the City of Harrisburg Bureau of Fire, on Monday at 8:20 p.m., crews were dispatched for a building fire at 2326 Berryhill Street.
Dauphin County dispatch reportedly began receiving multiple calls reporting the fire and that one person was trapped inside. Fire Bureau units arrived at the scene at 8:22 p.m., confirming the reported entrapment.
Fire crews quickly located the fire in the second-floor bedroom where the victim was found. She was immediately removed to the exterior of the building, according to the fire bureau, and life-saving measures were performed.
UPMC LifeTeam EMS officials arrived at the scene and began advanced life-saving treatment and airlifted the victim to a Lehigh Valley Burn Center for advanced treatment.
The victim reportedly succumbed to her injuries in the overnight hours. Her name is being withheld until her relatives are properly notified.
Fire crews quickly brought the blaze under control within ten minutes. The fire damage was reportedly contained to the bedroom and smoke damage to the second floor of the rowhome.
The fire was determined to have been started by smoking in bed, according to officials.
“Sadly, today we lost a member of our community to the ravages of fire," said fire chief Brian Enterline. "A day of celebration of the New Year quickly turned into a solemn evening for the family, our City and the members of the Bureau of Fire who valiantly tried to preserve life and property last night on Berryhill Street. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ family, and our fire and EMS personnel as they process the loss of a precious life.”
