HARRISBURG, Pa. — A fifth grader in the Harrisburg School District was found Thursday morning after falling asleep in a van that was taking them to Foose Elementary School, superintendent Eric Turman said in a letter to parents and guardians.
The bus driver "did not complete the daily required child check process at the end of the run" and the student was found only after their family was notified they were marked absent, Turman said.
The student was still sleeping in the locked vehicle when they were discovered.
The child was fine, but "this is certainly an upsetting incident" Turman continued in his statement.
The driver, who was employed by Krapf Bus, "a family-owned and operated bus company with more than 80 years of an excellent safety record," according to Turman, was immediately terminated "in accordance with company policies".
School officials confirmed that Krapf Bus is also holding meetings with its drivers to remind them of how critical the child check process is to their roles.
