HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Capitol Police K9 officer injured in Sunday's early morning officer-involved shooting incident is back home and recovering after receiving veterinary care in Montgomery County, police said.

K9 Rex was assisting in the pursuit of suspect Kendrell Hall as he fled on foot from police at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in downtown Harrisburg, police said.

During the chase, Hall opened fire at the pursuing officers. K9 Rex was struck by one of the bullets, police said.

The other officers returned fire, striking and killing Hall, according to police.

An autopsy on the 22-year-old Hall was scheduled for this morning, according to the Dauphin County Coroner's Office.

It is unclear why Hall was running from the police. He was wearing a mask, and a handgun was recovered at the scene, according to Dauphin County Coroner Fran Chardo.

The other officers were not injured.

Due to its nature as an officer-involved shooting, the Dauphin County Criminal Investigative Division is handling the case.

K9 Rex was transported to Metropolitan Veterinary Associates in Norristown, where he received treatment and was discharged with a clean bill of health.

On Monday, the K9 officer returned home with his handler and family, along with a police escort, Capitol Police said on Facebook. The dog is now recovering.
