Lancaster County man in critical condition after police chase exceeding 120 mph

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Mount Joy man is in critical condition after a police chase with Pennsylvania State Police.

According to PSP, on Jan. 9 at 12:01 a.m., troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a multicolored sports motorcycle for traffic violations on Fruitville Pike and Petersburg Road in Manheim Township. 

The motorcycle driver allegedly failed to stop and a chase began. 

The chase traveled westbound onto Graystone Road in East Petersburg Borough, Lancaster County at varying, excessive speeds. The pursuit entered SR 283 westbound at the SR 722 on-ramp where speeds reportedly increased to more than 120 miles per hour. 

According to PSP, the chase entered Lower Swatara Township in Dauphin County. As the fleeing motorcycle approached the intersection of SR 283 and South Eisenhower Boulevard, the driver attempted to execute a left turn but continued straight, striking a curb on the southbound lane. 

The driver and motorcycle traveled through the area, throwing the driver from the motorcycle and striking the side of a Wendy's restaurant at 801 South Eisenhower Boulevard. 

Police immediately began medical aid to the driver, who was identified as Steven Ray Custer, 27, from Mount Joy. 

EMS transported Custer to Penn State Hershey Medical Center after suffering life-threatening injuries. He currently is listed in critical condition. 

According to PSP, an investigation into Custer was launched and it was learned that he was wanted out of Lancaster County for a DUI offense. 

The investigation is ongoing.
