HERSHEY, Pa. — A member of the Derry Township School Board has been charged with furnishing alcohol to minors after police claim she and another adult provided alcohol to juvenile guests at a party held in their Java Avenue home last month.
Maria Memmi, 53, and her husband, Philip D'Adderio, 53, both of Hershey, were charged following an investigation by Derry Township Police, the police department said.
Memmi is one of nine members of the Derry Township School District Board of Directors, according to the school district's website. She has served on the Board since 2015, but a spokesperson with the school district told FOX43 that her term is scheduled to expire on December 4.
Memmi did not seek re-election this year, the spokesperson said.
"We would like to clarify that the incident in question involves a personal matter of the board member, which resulted in a citation by local police," the spokesperson said. "As a public educational institution, we respect the legal process and the privacy of all individuals involved."
Since Memmi is an elected official, the school district does not have the authority to discipline her, the spokesperson said.
The township's police department said Memmi and D'Adderio were charged at about 10:46 on October 28, after police were dispatched to the scene of a reported party on the 100 block of Java Avenue.
Police reported that multiple minors were found to be in possession of Busch Light beer, Twisted Tea and wine. Several minors were seen to be "manifestly under the influence of alcoholic beverages", or admitted to consuming alcohol while on the defendants' property, according to police.
Memmi and D'Adderio were charged via summons at Magisterial District Judge Dominic A. Pelino, according to police.
A preliminary hearing for Memmi and D'Adderio has been scheduled for January 16 before Judge Pelino, according to court records.
