Former NICU patients reunite with doctors, nurses who treated them

The reunion for children who were in the NICU in 2021 came with a pajama party.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Patients formerly in the NICUs at UPMC hospitals in Central Pennsylvania gathered in Harrisburg Thursday for a reunion with the doctors and nurses who helped treat them.

The UPMC NICU reunion came in the form of a pajama party at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg inside the UPMC Science Center.

The former patients were all treated in 2021, and reunited with many of the doctors and nurses who treated them at the time.

"It's so special to celebrate and be reunited again," said UPMC executive administrator Abby Flanders. "We call it the NICU reunion for a reason because there are very special bonds that form whenever at the very earliest stages of life they're in a vulnerable state, and not only are doctors and our nurses providing high quality care, but they're also very compassionate and bonding with the families and supporting them through the challenging time."

The pajama party included art and craft projects, story time and videos of popular cartoon character Bluey.
