HARRISBURG, Pa. — A man and woman from Harrisburg will both serve jail time for conspiring to steal interstate shipments of cell phones from a UPS facility, U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam announced Wednesday.

Parmod Kumar, 41, and Reecha Saini, 36, paid employees at a Harrisburg UPS facility to steal packages they believed contained smartphones, which they then arranged to be sold at a convenience store in the city, Karam said.

The thefts occurred over a period of three years, between 2018 and 2021.

Kumar and Saini were charged last year after an investigation by by the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Swatara Township Police Department.

After pleading guilty to charges of theft and conspiracy, Kumar was sentenced to a prison term of 12 months, while Saini received an eight-month sentence at a hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Sylvia Rambo, Karam said.

Rambo also ordered Kumar and Saini to pay more than $142,000 in restitution, according to Karam.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Carlo D. Marchioli prosecuted the case.
