Plans made to secure former William Penn school after December fire

The new proposal calls for the removal of asbestos, a thorough clean out of all debris and hazardous material and making sure the fire-damaged wing is secure.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Harrisburg School District took another step toward preserving the old William Penn High School building.

The district approved a $2.4 million contract to stabilize the building while future plans are determined. The new proposal calls for the removal of asbestos, a thorough clean out of all debris and hazardous material and making sure the wing damaged by a December fire is secure.

The new contract will also add new fencing around the building and added security.

This comes after city officials filed an emergency declaration to demolish a portion of the former high school affected by the fire on Dec. 13. The District's William Penn Community Task Force is expected to publicly make a formal recommendation for the future use of the property to the Court Appointed Receiver on Jan. 18, 2024, with a formal presentation at a School Board meeting on Jan. 23.
