Whitaker Center partners with UPMC to rename renowned science center

The Whitaker Center celebrated 25 years and art and science in Harrisburg with a big announcement.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Whitaker Center is celebrating 25 years of art and science in the Capital City with a big announcement.

The location's science area will now be known as the UPMC Science Center.

State lawmakers and Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams joined Whitaker Center and UPMC officials to celebrate the big milestone on Wednesday. They say the partnership signifies a new era of innovation and scientific exploration in central Pennsylvania.

"I think Whitaker Center has a very exciting untold story that we're hoping to continue to share with the community as we continue to also invite the community in and visit all the wonders that we have to offer here," said Mary Oliveira with the Whitaker Center for Science & Arts.

The 12-year sponsorship marks a collaboration between the science center and UPMC, a Pennsylvanian-based leader in healthcare and signifies a new era of innovation and scientific exploration in central Pa.

"There are so many different opportunities here and I look around, my children would love to spend time here, and with screen time and distractions, this is a wonderful alternative for children who are growing up in a very virtual world," said Elizabeth Ritter with UPMC Harrisburg.

The science center is open Thursdays through Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
