Possession of marijuana will remain a criminal offense in one York County borough after a veto and council vote struck down a proposed decriminalization ordinance.
North York's Ordinance 2024-03 would have made possessing small amounts of marijuana, of one ounce or less, a non-traffic citation that comes with a $50 fine. The ordinance would also impose a $50 fine for possessing paraphernalia and a $100 fine for smoking marijuana in public.
The ordinance was passed in a 3-2 council vote, with one member absent, at a council meeting on March 12. However, Mayor Nancy Brunk announced immediately after that she would submit a veto.
That veto officially defeated the ordinance at the North York Borough Council meeting on April 9, when the council voted 3-4 to uphold the mayor's veto. The council vote needed to be a majority plus one to override Mayor Brunk's veto.
North York Borough would have joined York, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Carlisle and Abbottstown among other communities in the state that have marijuana decriminalization ordinances.
