Derry Township Police urge pedestrians, drivers to keep each other safe along Hersheypark Drive

Authorities are urging people to keep an eye out for each other, as an investigation into a deadly pedestrian crash continues.

HERSHEY, Pa. — Derry Township Police continue investigating a deadly pedestrian crash that happened along Hersheypark Drive and Hotel Road early Friday morning.

The crash killed a 54-year-old man from New York.

Police said it remains unclear if the victim was attending a concert across the street before the crash.

Yvon Wenner from Steelton said she frequently drives down Hersheypark Drive and always worries about crashes between drivers and pedestrians.

“It is always busy, and you have to be so careful. And personally, I think the speed limit is too high for that road," said Wenner. “I don’t do the speed limit between the light at the GIANT Center to about [the Tanger Outlets]."

She said the road is at its busiest during the summer when thousands of people go to Hersheypark and concerts at Hersheypark Stadium.

Derry Township Police Chief Garth Warner said both pedestrians and drivers need to watch out for each other to stay safe.

“We want people to be able to cross the roadway safely, get to the venue, and get back to their car," said Chief Warner.

He added that there are several designated crosswalks for pedestrians to use to cross Hersheypark Drive. He advises anyone who is walking alongside the road to do so while facing oncoming traffic.

Chief Warner also said that drivers should obey all speed limits and to not drive distracted.

“Be cognizant that there’s going to be people in and around the area, and you can always have that possibility that somebody walks out where they shouldn’t," said Chief Warner.

Authorities say that people should also follow instructions from traffic control officers working along the busy street.

“They’re trying to get people to certain areas to cross because they can make sure they’re doing it safely," said Chief Warner.
