The York County SPCA still needs help after last week's power outage

36 dogs were expected back at the facility on Monday, but the SPCA is looking for temporary foster homes for at least 30 of them.

YORK, Pa. — Note: The video is from July 17.

The York SPCA on Monday provided an update its status following last week's power outage.

The facility was forced to place 68 dogs into foster care after storm damage caused the loss of all electricity, knocking out air conditioning in the building. The power loss prompted a plea for public help from staffers at the York SPCA.

There are currently 81 total dogs in volunteer foster care, according to York SPCA communications director Kristen Dempwolf.

While the power is back on at the York SPCA, the facility still needs help.

"This crisis is not over," Dempwolf said. "As we navigate this emergency, we urgently need more foster caregivers for our dogs in the coming weeks. Many of the dogs who were in very short-term foster homes or housed at local boarding facilities are returning to the shelter."

In fact, Dempwolf said, 36 dogs were expected to be back in the shelter by Monday. The York SPCA is hoping to place 30 of those dogs into temporary foster care this week, "so that our team can focus on restoring our facility and assisting the pets in our community who need it most," she said.

"If you are interested in becoming a temporary dog foster volunteer, please apply here," Dempwolf said. "Even a short period of time, a week or two, would make a difference to our team and the pets we care for. We provide everything the pets would need while in their foster homes, including food, toys, crates, medications, and more."

But due to the aftermath of a canine parvovirus outbreak, public browsing at the facility will remain closed until no earlier than Saturday.
