PENNSYLVANIA, USA — After a week where two people drowned at different locations in Central Pennsylvania, one local expert is offering advice on how to enjoy the water safely during the summer, especially during the upcoming July 4 weekend.
Mark Heller is the secretary of the Conestoga River Club, and says swimmers at rivers, lakes or pools need to know their limitations and be smart in the water.
"The opposite shore looks a lot closer than what it is until you get out there swimming towards it," Heller said. "So knowing that is important. Also, I enjoy a drink as much as the next person, but alcohol and water don't really mix all that well."
The advice comes after a woman drowned at Pinchot State Park in York County, and an 18-year-old man drowned in the Susquehanna River in Clinton County last week.
Heller says for those boating or kayaking as members of the club did on Sunday, being prepared is the way to go.
"I'm wearing a PFD—personal flotation device—so it's good to have," Heller said. "I have a safety whistle, so if you get in trouble, you can whistle and and alert others that you're in trouble."
Keeping track of the weather is also important for being on the water, as there remains a possibility for thunderstorms during the Fourth of July weekend.
"It's extremely important if they're forecasting thunder and lightning," Heller said. "Lightning is attracted to rivers, and you could get yourself in some serious trouble there."
