LEBANON, Pa. — The Lebanon County Board of Elections issued a warning to residents Friday about a suspected "smishing" scam involving phony texts messages.

The texts come from a number purporting to be the Lebanon County Board of Elections. The messages claim the recipient is not registered to vote, and provides a link where they can check their registration status.

These texts are not originating from the Board, officials said.

"Many of these messages are confirmed to be smishing messages that will corrupt the user's phone if clicked," said Lebanon County Director of Elections Sean D. Drasher. "These messages are fake, and possibly dangerous. DO NOT click (on them)."

According to Drasher, residents concerned about their registration status can visit votepa.gov to check their status.

"That's the official state elections site, and it has all their information up-to-date," Drasher said. "There is no reason to call our office unless they find something amiss, specifically at that (votepa.gov) website."
