LEBANON COUNTY, Pa. — Snow, ice and frigid temperatures made firefighters' already dangerous job even more taxing Wednesday night.
First responders with Schaefferstown EMS were called out just before 5:50 p.m. on Jan. 17 to battle a fire at a barn in the 200 block of Gibble Road, Heidelberg Township, according to Lebanon County 911 Dispatch.
Officials say there were no injuries reported, but the winter weather took a toll on the firefighters.
"Snow covered terrain, ice from water runoff, and frigid temperatures make for a difficult night for our firefighters," Schaefferstown EMS said on Facebook.
The Salvation Army Canteen Unit assisted first responders battling the blaze by serving hot food and beverages. The Schaefferstown EMS says the local Amish community helped as well, setting up a heated area for firefighters to take a break and warm up.
Pennsylvania State Police is investigating the cause of the fire.
