YORK, Pa. — On this Thanksgiving weekend, as people reflect on their blessings—Rick Martelle said he’s thankful for the York County Food Bank.
Rick has been working as a volunteer at the York County Food Bank for nine months. He said he used to be a client of the food bank when money was tight for him.
He began volunteering for the York County Food Bank back in February, as part of court-ordered community service. What started as 35 hours of community service eventually turned into a full-time volunteer position.
“It was a hard thing to go with, it wasn’t voluntary," said Martelle. "It actually did change my perspective on things, once the court-ordered mandate was done.”
Rick works twice a week for the food bank—helping distribute food to those in need throughout York County.
He feels a special connection to the people he serves, saying he knows what it's like to be in need of food assistance.
“I do talk to a lot of people there and it is a lot of emotional support that they need," said Martelle.
As we head into the holiday season, Rick said the York County Food Bank plays an important role by helping families with an essential need.
“We try to give out turkeys, hams, and other things to help them get the meals they need during the holidays," said Martelle.
From former client to current volunteer, Rick is doing what he can to give back to the community.
“It actually makes me happy to help them," said Martelle.
