LANCASTER, Pa. — As the temperatures continue to soar on Monday, several area senior centers are offering extended hours to help keep Central Pennsylvania seniors cool.

The Lancaster County Office of Aging announced that eight senior centers across the county will offer extended hours, while the Franklin County Area Agency on Aging said it will open three of its locations longer on Monday and Tuesday to help its seniors escape the heat.

Due to the high heat and humidity on Monday, it will feel like temperatures have exceeded 100 degrees. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties from noon Monday through 8 P.M. Tuesday. A heat advisory is in effect for Mifflin and Juniata counties from noon Monday to 8 P.M. Tuesday.

Central PA residents are advised to stay hydrated and find ways to keep cool to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Franklin County

The Franklin County Area Agency on Aging will open its Chambersburg, Greencastle and Tuscarora senior activity centers for extended hours (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.) today (Monday, July 15) and tomorrow (Tuesday, July 16) as cooling stations for local residents ages 60 and older.

Older Franklin County residents are also welcome to escape the heat at the county's five other senior activity centers, which will be operating under normal hours of operation.

Staff will continue to monitor weather conditions and will make decisions regarding additional extended hours as soon as possible.
