FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. — Fire crews are actively working to contain a wildfire that erupted south of US Route 30 yesterday. The fire, which is approximately 2 miles south of Caledonia Golf Club, has so far impacted 191 acres of land managed by the DCNR Bureau of Forestry. Officials say the fire is 80% contained, with efforts ongoing to strengthen containment lines and safeguard nearby structures.
The wildfire is of particular concern due to the region's high fuel loads and nearby buildings, according to a release from the Bureau of Forestry. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but firefighting crews are focusing on preventing its spread through strategic measures.
On Friday, burnout operations were successfully conducted to connect the containment lines to New Baltimore and District Roads on the southern and southeastern perimeters of the fire. Today’s plans include reinforcing containment lines, with particular attention given to the leafblower line on the northern edge of the fire.
Today's relatively mild and calm conditions are expected to aid firefighting efforts, though vigilance remains essential due to the dry landscape.
Several roads have been closed to ensure public safety and allow firefighting crews unimpeded access:
- New Baltimore Road from Caledonia Golf Club to District Road
- Corl’s Road
- District Road from SR 233 to Blackbill Road
Additionally, all hiking trails in the vicinity are closed until further notice to prevent any risks to hikers and ensure unhindered emergency operations.
Residents and visitors are advised to stay informed through local news and follow any guidance or evacuation notices issued by authorities. Firefighters remain committed to protecting the community and the landscape as they work tirelessly to bring the fire under full control.
