Gifford Pinchot State Park says swimming areas closed for rest of 2024 season

Gifford Pinchot State Park says harmful algae conditions have persisted at its two beaches, leading the park to prohibit swimming until May 2025.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Editor's note: The above video is from July 9.

Swimming is off limits at Gifford Pinchot State Park for the rest of the 2024 season, park officials announced today on Facebook.

Harmful algae conditions were first reported in early July, prompting authorities to close Quaker Race Beach indefinitely.

People who are exposed to these algae may experience different symptoms. It could "be something as minor as a skin rash, but you could have more serious symptoms like irritation of the eyes and ears and nose. If you ingest the water, it could cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain,” Michael Plish, assistant park manager of Gifford Pinchot State Park, said in July.

Gifford Pinchot State Park reported today that water sample test results continue to show that harmful algae conditions have persisted at Quaker Race Beach and Campground Beach, leading the park to prohibit swimming until May 2025.

Other typical park activities on or near the lake--such as boating and fishing--are permitted, with a reminder to use safe water recreation practices that help protect yourself and your pets from harmful algae and other recreational water illnesses.

Encouraged practices include:

  • Wash your hands after contact with untreated water.
  • Shower or bathe people and pets immediately after participating in water-based recreation activities.
  • Avoid swallowing and inhaling untreated water during recreational activities.
  • Avoid contact with water that has foam, scum, or discoloration.
  • Seek and follow any waterbody advisories or closures.

Despite the algae conditions, locals were still able to enjoy a day at Gifford Pinchot State Park over Labor Day weekend.
