HARRISBURG, Pa. — Governor Shapiro has ordered United States and Commonwealth flags in Dauphin County to fly at half-staff.
The order applies to all U.S. flags on all Commonwealth facilities, public buildings and grounds to honor Steelton Fire Department Chief Gene Vance.
Vance, 70, died on Wednesday. He was considered by many to be a fixture in the Dauphin County borough.
"Gene was tireless in his efforts to ensure the safety of the volunteer firefighters under him, providing training, necessary equipment, and education," the borough said in a press release remembering Vance. "He was a listening ear to many, guiding them through life’s challenges on a personal level. He was a brother, firefighter, colleague, and friend to thousands.
The United States and Commonwealth flags will fly at half-staff until sunset on the date of interment, which has not yet been decided.
All Pennsylvanians are invited to participate in the tribute.
