Hanging 'Over the Edge' for charity in Harrisburg

Thrill seekers are repelling down an 18-story Harrisburg building to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region.

Ever rappel down an 18-story building? If you’re a thrill seeker, this might be just the thing for you.

If you see ropes hanging off the Market Street Plaza building in Harrisburg… don’t worry, it’s all to raise money for the Big Brother Big Sisters of the Capital Region.

This is the sixth year for the ‘Over the Edge’ rappel. This is an event that’s meant to push everyone outside their comfort zone.

“We have a lot of youth in our programs where it can be very scary, meeting new friends or adjusting to new environments or even just dealing with day-to-day challenges. We’re honoring that and sending some brave people 'over the edge,' off the building and safely descending to the ground," said Krystina Schltz with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region.

FOX43's Lyndsay Barna was one of those brave souls heading over the edge for her first time.

"The view was stunning from the top of the building, although it was hard not to look down," she recalled. "The encouragement from people yelling you can do it kept me rappeling. It took me just a little over 12 minutes to rappel over 200 feet."

The goal is to raise $80,000 for one-on-one youth mentoring programs to help students like Braylen Lownes.

“I joined when I was around nine and I had a police officer. His name is Justin Dolyes and he’s my mentor so he would come in and check on me from time to time and I would spend some time with him," explained Lownes, a Susquehanna Township junior. "I know I have someone on my side that I could just go to and talk to.”

Braylen also had the chance to go “over the edge.” He’s part of the youth advisory program for bigs.

Friday’s event is open to the public for anyone or business that raises $1,000. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"It was a workout, I’m sure I’ll be feeling this tomorrow," Lyndsay joked.
