Flight 93 Hero Flag unfurled at State Capital Rotunda

Attendees witnessed a rare moment involving the Hero Flag before it goes to the Smithsonian.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Flight 93 Hero Flag was unfurled Tuesday, Sept. 10 in the State Capital Rotunda. Those who attended the ceremony witnessed a rare moment as the Hero Flag is hardly ever unfurled.

The ceremony was in honor of the 40 passengers and crew members on United Airlines Flight 93 when terrorists hijacked the plane on Sept. 11, 2001. This marks the 23rd-anniversary remembrance of the actions of the Flight 93 heroes who died that day.

"It keeps history alive and teach[es] our generations that these are attacks that happen but the way we came together [shows] how we were a nation under one," said Bianca Santos, finance analyst of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

The Flight 93 Hero Flag has been used since the first remembrance ceremony at the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa.

Today marked the last time the flag was opened before it goes to the Smithsonian.
