BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — A Lancaster County man was one of the two people killed and four injured in a fiery crash on Interstate 83 near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border Wednesday afternoon, authorities said Thursday.
James Hutson, 61, of Ephrata, was driving a Peterbilt truck that was struck by a pickup truck hauling a trailer that lost control on I-83 South and crossed into opposing lanes, according to Maryland State Police. Both vehicles then burst into flames.
According to police, two other vehicles were also struck in the crash before the pickup truck and the Peterbilt truck collided.
Hutson and the driver of the pickup truck, identified by authorities as Kevin Johnson, 53, of Ruther Glen, Virginia, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Four other people were taken to WellSpan York Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash, police said.
All lanes of Interstate 83 were shut down for over five hours, authorities said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
