SCRANTON, Pa. — The city of Scranton will welcome home Scranton Police Detective Kyle Gilmartin today at police headquarters along South Washington Avenue.
Detective Gilmartin was shot in the line of duty on January 11th when he and fellow officers were ambushed in a gang-related shooting in the city's west side. He was released from the hospital 12 days later and has been recovering at a rehabilitation hospital near Philadelphia ever since.
City officials say Gilmartin has made remarkable progress in the seven weeks following the attack. Lackawanna County and beyond has rallied around Detective Gilmartin and his family throughout his recovery.
He is expected to be released from the rehabilitation hospital around noon. Gilmartin will then travel directly to Scranton. He's scheduled to arrive at police headquarters around 2 p.m., where he will speak publicly for the first time since the shooting.
The community is invited to attend Gilmartin's homecoming and are encouraged to park in the garage at the Marketplace at Steamtown along Lackawanna Avenue.
The 100 block of South Washington Avenue will be temporarily closed between 1 and 3 p.m. as a result.
