Lake Williams announcement coming soon says The York Water Company

Lake Williams is expected to re-open soon for recreation after more than two years of work.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The reservoir at Lake Williams is once again full for the first time in years.

This comes as The York Water Company nears completion of the Lake Williams Dam Project.

The multi-year project started in 2021 to renovate its old dam from 1912 and bring it up to today’s standards and regulations.

The reservoir had to be drained to complete renovations but started to be refilled in February.

The company reports wildlife is already returning to the reservoir including several species of fish and turtle.

The new dam is expected to impound 1.4 billion gallons of water to serve more than 200,000 customers.

For two years the lake has been closed to public recreation.

But with Memorial Day just around the corner, company officials say people can expect good news very soon.

“For us, it is really about public access and we are almost at a point where we are going to be able to open the reservoir and all the land around the reservoir to public access. I’m going to ask for the patience of the public for just a little longer and we hope we’re going to have an announcement very soon about when that is going to happen,” said J.T. Hand, president and CEO of The York Water Company.

That announcement is expected to be made in the next 48 hours.

In the meantime, the company reminds people not to trespass until then or else run the risk of getting a fine from authorities of up to $150.
