Lancaster County libraries face major funding cuts in proposed 2025 county budget

According to the proposed budget, the Library System of Lancaster County would see a $360,000 decrease from its $2 million budget.

LANCASTER, Pa. — The Library System of Lancaster County is set to face a major cut in funding from the Lancaster County government.

According to the proposed 2025 budget, the library system would see county funding decrease by 17%—equating to roughly $360,000 from its $2 million budget.

“It’s an unprecedented cut for us," said Karla Trout, executive director for the Library System of Lancaster County. "It will take us back to a funding level we haven’t seen in 25 years.”

Trout said around 90% of the library's funds come from the county level. She added that the decision will force them to make their own cuts, which could impact a wide range of services.

"The other thing that happens out of our office is the operating of the Bookmobile, so there's a potential for it to have an impact on that," said Trout.

During the most recent meeting, the Lancaster County commissioners announced all county grants would be cut by 17% as part of the proposed 2025 budget.

“These are hard decisions, absolutely," said Lancaster County Commissioner Ray D'Agostino.

The board also plans to use some rainy-day funds to balance the budget.

“That’s typical with how you work with other people’s money," said D'Agostino. "You don’t go to them for more until you’ve done all your homework.”

As budget negotiations continue, library officials are calling on more community support as they reexamine their upcoming budget.

“The community can make a difference by jumping on to the ExtraGive and donating to help make up for the loss," said Trout.

A public hearing on the Lancaster County budget will be held in December.
