Lancaster County tree service receives influx of emergency calls after wind

Tree removal services received a boost in emergency calls Monday as Pennsylvania experienced the effects of strong winds.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — It was a busy day for crews at Love’s Tree Service on Monday.

Operations Manager, Tim Leibfried, says he received an increase in emergency service calls due to the wind.

“In these circumstances, this job was not scheduled for today, but when you get emergency damage, the team reaches out to me so I can find out where the crews are and pull crews around and send them to where the emergency jobs are at,” Leibfried explained.

Crews responded to a home in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County after the owner called about a tree leaning over their house.

It isn’t the only call Leibfried’s responded to.

“Normally it’s just broken limbs, could be mostly from white pines,” Leibfried said.

After a period of extreme rain, the ground can become very saturated, couple that with the strong winds and you can start to see uprooting.

Crews need to be extra careful when working in high winds.

“You do got to take some extra precautions cause you might have to put a block-and-tackle, or a block up in a different tree to lower the limbs down,” Leibfried said.

How do you when it’s time to have a tree removed?

“Just looking up at your trees, looking for dead branches, cracked limbs,” Leibfried said.

With strong winds also comes the possibility of damaged power lines.

If you encounter a downed power line, avoid the area, and call your local public works department.

If it’s a downed tree, Leibfried recommends people not clear the debris on their own to avoid unnecessary injury and to call a professional service.
