Biden-Harris administration gives Lancaster $1 million for climate improvements

Lancaster will use the money to get trees from the nine Lancaster County tree farms.

LANCASTER, Pa. — Lancaster residents may notice the city becoming a little more green this spring.

The Biden-Harris administration awarded the city $1 million, and it's all for trees!

As part of the administration's funding toward climate improvements, Lancaster will use the money to get trees from nine Lancaster County tree farms.

The trees will be planted in parks and along streets.

Officials believe this initiative will benefit everyone, especially children.

"We have kids playing in the street [and] on playgrounds that are too hot because there is no tree canopy keeping Lancaster cool," said State Representative Ismail Smith-Wade-El (D) of Lancaster County. "What we're talking about is making a better future for our children."

The city is currently planning specifically where the trees will go. It hopes that planting will begin next year.

"By springtime, folks will notice a difference in their neighborhoods, and in a few years there will be a beautiful canopy keeping Lancaster cool," said Adam Ortiz, Environmental Protection Agency Mid-Atlantic Region administrator.
