LANCASTER, Pa. — The City of Lancaster announced Tuesday that its Department of Public Works is set to begin leaf collection for the season.

Leaves naturally falling into the public right-of-way, streets or onto sidewalks are collected during street sweeping, while leaves falling onto private property must be bagged, like yard waste, for collection alongside trash and recycling, the city's announcement said.

Yard waste and bagged leaf collection occurs throughout the year on designated weeks. Residents can place yard waste, including leaves, alongside their regular trash for pick-up on their scheduled trash collection day, as indicated in the annual collection schedule.

“Neighbors properly managing leaves on their properties helps ensure the public right-of-way is clear for everyone to use," said Steve Campbell, Lancaster's Director of Public Works. "Properly bagging yard leaves also allows Public Works staff to operate more efficiently and effectively."

All leaves from private properties must be securely bagged in yard waste bags, according to the city. Residents can pick up free yard waste bags from several convenient locations, including the Recycling Drop-Off Center and various municipal offices within the city. These locations are listed on the City website.

Leaves that fall in the public right-of-way are collected during the street sweeping schedule. Residents may sweep leaves from sidewalks into the street for collection shortly before scheduled street sweeping.

"It's important to note that yard waste, including leaves, collected through this program is sent for composting. However, leaves collected in the street cannot be composted due to contamination," the city said.

Residents are also reminded that they have the option to leave leaves in their yard if they prefer. However, leaves on sidewalks and the public right-of-way should be cleared for safety.
