Shots fired incident closes off three Lancaster County blocks, suspect arrested

COLUMBIA, Pa. — A police incident closed a portion of Cherry Street in Columbia, Lancaster County on Friday afternoon, according to emergency dispatch and other reports.

According to the Columbia Borough Police Department, officers were dispatched to a home along the 300 block of Cherry St. Charles Harris, 40, the subject of a weapons violation warrant, was located inside the home. 

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Department deployed a K-9 and Harris reportedly fired shots in the direction of officers and the dog. 

Neither the dog nor the officers were injured. 

As a result, the 200, 300 and 400 blocks of Cherry Street were closed and two nearby schools were placed on a precautionary lockdown. Officers set up a perimeter, secured the scene and kept Harris inside the home until the arrival of the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. 

Officers convinced Harris to surrender and he was taken into custody on a warrant for persons not to possess a firearm. Charges for Friday's incident are pending until the conclusion of the investigation. 

The lockdown was lifted for schools just after 2 p.m. and all streets have since been reopened. No one was injured.
