Dutch Wonderland works to keep guests cool as summer begins

The family theme park has installed sprinklers and placed water coolers throughout the park.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — With temperatures once again reaching the mid-90s in Central Pennsylvania on Thursday, visitors to Dutch Wonderland in East Lampeter Township are finding ways to brave the heat with a little help from the park itself.

The park has set up sprinklers across its grounds and has placed water coolers in various spots for guests to use.

"We never know, because we're very weather dependent, if people will want to come out and hang out with us," said Courtney Burkarth, the park's marketing director. "But luckily, everyone has seen that it's a good place to stay cool, to just be out with your family, make some memories, and enjoy the sunshine, and then get in the shade when you're done with it."

The park has also extended the hours of its water park, Duke's Lagoon, for an extra hour this week.

"There's water slides, splash pads, and if you leave Duke's Lagoon, there's also a double log flume that you can go on, or sit in the splash zone at the dive show and get soaked there as well," Burkarth said. "So there's plenty of ways to stay cool."

The park also celebrated the birthday of its mascot Duke the Dragon on Thursday.
