LANCASTER, Pa. — The Manheim Township Police Department this week announced the passing of former Police Chief Thomas Rudzinski, who retired from the department in June.

Rudzinski, who had been battling cancer, died at his home Thursday morning, the department said.

Prior to his retirement, Rudzinski had served with the Manheim Township Police Department since 1987, following his graduation from Franklin & Marshall College.

Rudzinski later obtained a master's degree in criminal justice from Boston University and completed Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.

"He was highly decorated, receiving numerous awards for proficiencies, lifesaving, and distinguished service," the police department said of Rudzinski. "He served the municipality in various assignments & capacities during his tenure and was promoted through the ranks -- Sergeant, Lieutenant, and ultimately rose to Chief of Police in 2017.

"Tom helped further the field of law enforcement by serving on numerous committees and in various organizations, notably as the President of the Central Pennsylvania Chiefs, the Third Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Associations, and the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission."

The police department said Rudzinksi deeply cared about the Manehim Township community, which he wa a part of for more than 36 years.

"He took the stake he shared with all the residents and businesses seriously," the police department said. "He volunteered in countless capacities, youth baseball and scouting, to name a few."

In an interview on Townlively.com earlier this year, Rudzinski said, "My goal was to make a difference for as long as possible. I hope I've been able to improve the quality of life in Manheim Township. I hope that I did a good job of making the community a safe place to live."

Details regarding funeral arrangements are still developing, the police department said.

"We ask you to keep Tom's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the department said.
