LANCASTER, Pa. — The Lancaster County District Attorney's Office on Friday issued a warning to Lancaster County residents about a suspected phone scam involving phony calls from someone claiming to be from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

"Local officials are aware of numerous cases and believe others could be targeted," the DA's Office said.

According to authorities, the scammer claims to be a Chief Deputy with the Sheriff's Office and says the recipient of the call has either missed jury duty or has an outstanding citation, and that they have to post a bond of $2,500 before their "hearing."

"The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office will never call demanding payment over phone regarding these matters," the DA's Office said.

The incident is under investigation by local authorities.

Anyone who receives such a call is asked to contact the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 717-299-8200 or their local police department.

Recipients of the phone calls are warned not to provide information or payment.
