LANCASTER, Pa. — Lancaster Police officers made a total of 42 traffic stops during a recent enforcement detail focused on addressing the problem of excessive speeding in the city, the police department announced this week.
The detail was organized in collaboration with the Center for Traffic Safety and with the support of Lancaster City's Vision Zero Initiative, police said.
The Feb. 15 detail targeted the 700 block of South Prince Street, which police claim has a history of serious accidents that were predominantly caused by excessive speeding, including a fatal crash in 2021.
The posted speed limit in that area is 25 mph, according to police.
During the enforcement detail, 42 vehicles were pulled over and cited with the following violations, according to the department:
- 41 citations for violation of PA Vehicle Code 3362 – Maximum Speed Limits
- 1 citation for violation of PA Vehicle Code 4703 – Operation of Vehicle Without Official Certificate of Inspection
- 1 citation for violation of PA Vehicle Code 4581 – Restraint Systems
- 1 citation for violation of PA Vehicle Code 1501 – Driver’s Required to be Licensed
- 1 citation for violation of PA Vehicle Code 1543 – Driving While Operating Privilege is Suspended or Revoked
- 1 citation for violation of PA Vehicle Code 1515 – Notice of Change of Name or Address
The maximum speed recorded during the enforcement detail was 53 mph, which is "significantly above the posted limit," the police department said.
"This initiative underscores the commitment of the Lancaster City Bureau of Police, the City of Lancaster, and other local agencies to address traffic safety concerns, particularly in areas with a history of serious accidents," the department said. "The aim is to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities by enforcing speed limits and other traffic regulations."
