LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — A section of Little Conestoga Creek turned green on Saturday morning after a dye spill.

Peter Taraborelli, Public Information Officer for the Mountville Fire Department said a concerned citizen called 911 just after 8 a.m. to report the water in the Little Conestoga Creek near the intersection of Hershey Mill Road and Fieldgate Drive, was bright green in color.

Hazmat crews along with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection arrived at the scene and confirmed the water was indeed green.

Taraborelli said the crews successfully traced the dye back to a retention pond for a storage warehouse nearby.

The green dye is commonly used to detect leaks in pipes Taraborelli said, but it is unclear how the spill happened.

DEP confirmed the green substance in the creek is a food-grade dye and is not harmful to people or animals.

The dye is expected to stick around for a little bit while it naturally flushes out of the creek.
