EPHRATA, Pa. — A little over a year after its reopening, a Lancaster County movie theater is closing its doors again, its owners said Thursday.

The New Main Theater in Ephrata has closed, effective immediately, according to a message on its Facebook page.

A former landmark in the Lancaster County borough, the Art Deco theater is located in the Brossman Business Complex. It closed in 2020, under previous ownership due to the COVID-19 pandemic, re-opened that fall under new ownership, and then sporadically operated until it was taken over by the owners of another downtown business, the Black Forest Brewery, in October 2022.

The new owners blamed sluggish ticket sales and a lack of revenue for the theater's latest demise.

In addition to showing movies, the theater's latest incarnation also included availability as an event space. The theater consisted of two 90-seat auditoriums.

“Our goal in reopening The New Main was to attract unique and interesting events to better utilize the live stage available in the theater known as ‘The Grand,’ as well as offer affordable ticket prices to our community,” the owners said in a press release announcing the theater's closure. “Unfortunately, the level of interest from the community and local businesses did not support this initiative.”
