LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Nine Lancaster County state roads will close for parts of the next three months beginning next week. Officials expect the improvements will make the roads less slippery.
The roads are all curved, and PennDOT says this makes it more likely for cars to skid or slide off.
"These could be sections of roadway where vehicles are traveling at higher speeds, and entering the curve might be some sight distance issues," said PennDOT spokesperson Dave Thompson.
PennDOT will be applying a high friction surface treatment to the roads, which are all high-risk or high-volume crash areas, to increase traction for cars.
"When cars and trucks travel over a section of road, there might be what you would call a polishing effect on the roadway surface where it kind of wears it and polishes it makes it smoother," Thomson said. "The high friction surface treatment will alleviate that by making it a little bit rougher through that area so there's more friction between the vehicle and the roadway."
The work begins this week and will continue, in some cases, through July 31. There will be no work done between 6:00 AM and 8:30 AM.
The roads that will be worked on are the following;
- Route 72 in Rapho Township between Mount Hope Road and Pinch Road (no closure between 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM)
- Route 241 in Mount Joy Township between Ridgeview Road and Koser Road
- Route 324 in Martic Township between Red Hill Road and East Loop Road
- Route 897 in Brecknock Township between Stone Hill Road and Gehman School Road
- Reinholds Road in East Cocalico Township between Bonview Drive and Smokestown Road
- Millport Road between Eshelman Road and River Bend Park Road in West Lampeter Township (no closure between 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM on Fridays)
- Donerville Road in Manor Township between Weaver Road and Habecker Church Road
- North Ridge Road in West and East Cocalico townships from Resh Road to Mill Road
- Prospect Road in West Hempfield Township from Ironville Pike to Fairview Road
