LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — On any given day, the stretch of Route 30 between Eastbrook and Newport Roads in Lancaster County sees a lot of traffic.
Drivers on the road will soon see a lot of construction work, as PennDOT gets into gear with a $7.6 million project.
Several intersections will be receiving upgrades as part of the project, including the widening of the road, a resurfacing of the road and new pavement markings.
"There's going to be traffic signal improvements, curb ramps, sidewalks, new signs," a spokesman for PennDOT District 8 said. "We are responsible for that road and making it as pleasant as possible for motors and pedestrians and bicyclists who use it."
Other improvements include a Superpave overlay, milling, base replacement, ADA and other miscellaneous construction on the road through Salisbury, Paradise, Leacock and East Lampeter Townships.
The work will address safety in the area and the experience for drivers, while also making things easier for PennDOT.
"It's going to improve the rideability of that road. It's going to be a smoother ride for people," Thompson said. " We'll have to do less frequent maintenance on it, less potholes, you know, during the winter and things like that."
The project won’t address one of the biggest community concerns: speeding.
"Traffic still flies up here," Zina Redcay, who lives in Paradise Township, said. "There was an accident out here the other day, somebody came up the road and bashed into the back end of somebody."
The crash happened at the intersection of Singer Avenue and Route 30, which was scheduled to get a traffic light. Zina worries that won’t stop crashes.
"I think there's still going to be a lot of accidents until people get used to the red light being there," she said.
PennDOT officials say they hope to complete the improvements by the summer of 2025.
