WILLOW STREET, Pa. — A York County man has been charged with homicide by vehicle and other offenses after police say he caused a deadly crash in Lancaster County in 2022.

Ryan G. Schilling, 42, of Red Lion, was driving a tractor trailer truck that struck a passenger vehicle at the intersection of Route 272 South (Willow Street Pike) and Long Lane (Route 741) in West Lampeter Township on Oct. 11, 2022, police said.

The collision occurred when Schilling's vehicle went through a red light, West Lampeter Township Police claim.

According to police, Schilling called 911 after the crash, which occurred shortly after midnight. He allegedly told the dispatcher "I ran a stop light and a guy hit me," police said.

When questioned by police at the scene, Schilling initially told an officer he was "pretty sure" the light was green when the collision occurred, but later said "To be honest with you, I think that light was red when I ran through."

The driver of the passenger vehicle was unconscious when police arrived and sustained a serious laceration to his arm. The victim later died of his injuries, police said.

The Lancaster County Coroner's Office determined the victim died of multiple traumatic injuries.

Police reviewed dash cam footage from Schilling's truck, along with surveillance footage from a nearby Turkey Hill store, both of which showed Schilling's vehicle traveled through the intersection while there was a steady red signal on the traffic light.

Schilling's vehicle was traveling 32 mph at the time of the crash, according to his dash cam.

In addition to homicide by vehicle, Schilling is charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to police.

Schilling was charged on Tuesday and arraigned before Magisterial District Judge William E. Benner Jr., who set bail at $25,000.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 22, according to court records.
