Lancaster nonprofit planning emergency relief for people in Gaza impacted by the ongoing conflict

The Mennonite Central Committee is working with partners on the ground to provide immediate relief for families displaced by the Israel-Hamas conflict.

EPHRATA, Pa. — As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, organizations around the world are looking to bring humanitarian assistance into the country.

This week, the Mennonite Central Committee, a nonprofit dedicated to helping in humanitarian efforts around the world, announced that they are planning emergency relief for people in Gaza impacted by the ongoing conflict.

“It is who we are, and it is what we do around the world. This is one of those places that needs it," said Ann Graber-Hershberger, the executive director of the Mennonite Central Committee.

Hershberger says Israeli and Palestinian partners on the ground have already distributed food packages to 35 families, and bedding to 11 families. However, she adds the relief efforts have been challenging.

“Water is running out, food and medical supplies are all running out," said Hershberger. "It’s going to be difficult if the path isn’t open to get more aid from the outside.”

She said if the situation in Gaza changes, humanitarian aid could make its way from MCC’s Lancaster headquarters. Volunteers at the Lancaster headquarters have helped distribute food, medical aid, school supplies, and comforters to countries around the world.

“There had been plans for a humanitarian shipment to Gaza prior to this. That, of course, is on hold, but those plans remain in place," said Hershberger. “Maybe in the next months, those comforters you saw there will find their way to Gaza, for people who’ve lost everything.”
