Fire at Met Ed substation disrupts power in Lebanon

Roughly 3,300 people in and around the city were affected Thursday morning, though a company spokesperson said power should be restored to all by noon.

LEBANON, Pa. — More than 2,000 people in the city of Lebanon experienced a temporary power disruption due to a fire at a Met Ed substation on the 100 block of N. 16th St., officials with the company and emergency responders said Thursday.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 a.m. There are firefighters and Med Ed personnel at the scene, but they are letting the fire burn out on its own, a Met Ed spokesperson said.

Video of the fire shot by Lisa Scheffler showed a large plume of smoke and visible flames in the area, as did this video shot by Lester Estevez.

No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze, but roughly 3,300 people in Lebanon County, including 1,700 in the city, experienced a power disruption, the spokesperson said.

Northwest Elementary School on the 1300 block of Old Forge Road dismissed early due to the disruption.

"We are reconfiguring our electric distribution network to restore customers," the Met Ed spokesperson told FOX43. "We’ve restored power to about 1,000 customers so far, and should have most of them back before noon.

"Once the fire is out we’ll go into the substation and evaluate damage and determine the cause of the fire and evaluate what repairs need to be made."

Power was restored to all affected customers by 10:15 a.m., according to a Met Ed spokesperson.

This is a developing story. FOX43 has a crew on the scene, and we will provide updates as they become available.
