HARRISBURG, Pa. — State Police have charged a Harrisburg man with vehicular homicide and related offenses in connection to a crash that killed a pedestrian in Lebanon County last year.
Michael E. Zimmerman, 62, is also charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving, and careless driving following an investigation of the crash, which claimed the life of 51-year-old Jill Staub on August 22 in East Hanover Township.
Staub was gathering her mail at the intersection of State Route 22 and Racehorse Drive when she was struck by Zimmerman's vehicle at approximately 3:49 p.m., according to State Police.
Multiple witnesses reported Zimmerman's vehicle was traveling west on Route 22 when it drifted left, struck a concrete barrier, swerved right, exited the roadway and struck the row of mailboxes where Staub was gathering her mail.
Staub was also struck by Zimmerman's vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Responding troopers noted Zimmerman had "redness in his eyes and appeared to be overly tired" when they spoke to him at the crash scene. There was also an odor of alcohol emanating from him, police claim.
Zimmerman allegedly admitted to consuming two 12-ounce IPA beers before driving, according to the criminal complaint filed against him.
Zimmerman consented to a blood draw at Hershey Medical Center, which occurred about two hours after the incident, according to the complaint. Zimmerman's BAC was at 0.02%.
Zimmerman is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 16 in Lebanon County.
