Lightning strike ignites fire at York County home, dispatch says

A bolt of lightning ignited a fire at a home in Lower Windsor Township, York County early Wednesday morning, according to York County 911 Dispatch.

YORK, Pa. — A lightning strike ignited a York County home early this morning, according to York County 911 Dispatch.

Firefighters responded to the 800 block of Elham Drive in Lower Windsor Township just after 6 a.m. on Aug. 7 to contain the blaze.

The homeowner says a lightning strike ignited a fire in the backyard late last night. After putting out that fire, he waited a few hours to make sure it was completely out.

Early this morning, the homeowner and his wife noticed smoke coming from the left side of the house. They say a fire broke out on the roof about five minutes later. The Yorkana Fire Company says it found fire in the walls and above the ceiling. It allegedly started in the attic area above the front door.

Dispatch says there were no injuries, and the coroner's office was not called to the scene. No roads were closed in the area of the fire.

About 15 companies responded to the two-alarm fire, according to Don Hopple, the deputy fire chief of Yorkana Fire Company. Firefighters were able to access a steady stream of water from a fire hydrant across the street.

Hopple estimates that the house suffered about $300,000 in damages from water and smoke.

The Fire Marshal will investigate to determine the cause of the second blaze, but the manner was ruled accidental.
